[Ad] Come spend a day in my life with me as an author, creative and toddler mum living in Edinburgh!

Wearing a vintage outfit inspired by this @orlakiely bag - my Gran had a similar bag that I coveted when I was wee, just like Mary Poppins! Orla Kiely’s is a modern take with forest green boucle - big enough for my laptop and a few toddler essentials - and I’m wearing a dress my Gran made my Mum in the 1970s I think, with a thrifted velvet blazer!

No pics before 7.17 a.m. - wake-up 5ish (improving) followed by morning routine, stop to notice the beautiful sunrise 🌅

9.21 a.m. drop-off done, start the working day with a walk in our local green space and…

9.29 a.m. - a much-needed coffee pitstop!

9.50 a.m. - walk through the Meadows. Remembering to look up and savouring that golden light as the leaves turn.

10.08 a.m. - arrive at the National Library of Scotland to work for the morning. Visiting the library helps me step away from the noise of modern life for a bit and immerse myself in reading and research.

No pics inside so you’ll just have to take my word for it! Lots of reading, note-making and thinking and generally slowing down without the distraction of emails.

12.10 p.m. - Reading done, and it’s time to head home for lunch. I choose the longer route for a little nature top-up and help my thoughts settle.

12.19 p.m. - remember to look down! So much surprising nature to be found, even in the city.

12.51 p.m. - tomato, lemon and ricotta salad with homemade bread in our sunny kitchen while I listen to a podcast.

1.25 p.m. - back to my desk to work my notes from the day into my proposal. Not quite sure where it’s going but sometimes you have to let it work itself out while you do something else. Not pictured: lots of tea.

4.55 p.m. - leave for pick-up, dinner, bath and bedtime routine.

Read my book for a bit, fall asleep watching TV and bed before 10.30 p.m.! Stop to notice the moon and the clouds blowing across the sky.

❣️ Capetto, our neighbours at @little__capo this is a downstairs Italian style cafe & bar for all day coffee, drinks and snacks. @capetto__

🧡 Fortitude: a beloved Edinburgh speciality roaster with its own roastery, serving single origin coffee alongside delicious baked goods @fortitudecoffee

📍Last but not least, The Milkman: Yes it’s on every tourist’s list & yes there may be a queue but the coffee and views of Cockburn street make it worth the wait. @themilkmancoffee

Sarfraz and Jemma opened Beatnik on Brougham Street in November 2022 with one deliberate absence: no wifi, no laptops, loud music instead.

The Tollcross room runs on rotating roasters and curated pastries, one Tuesday evening a week stretching later than the rest of a tighter daytime schedule. The no wifi rule has shaped who shows up, conversation and community over the work from home crowd more common at other Edinburgh cafes.

A cafe built around what it left out, closer to a living room than a work space.
