Mordern Problems, Creative Solutions? 💪🏻👀 AI powered cameras and flock cameras now watch streets across the world, trained to recognise faces and read licence plates in seconds. Adversarial fashion has risen to combat this with brands like Cap_able, and URBANPRIVACY designing prints engineered specifically to confuse AI. Here, the algorithm sees a giraffe, an umbrella, or nothing at all, but not a tangible person! These ethically made pieces are proof that clothing can be quiet resistance in a dystopian hellscape not even George Orwell could have fathomed. Se per decenni la moda è servita a renderci più visibili, nell’era della sorveglianza automatizzata inizia a esplorare anche il suo opposto: restituirci la possibilità di passare inosservati. Qualche anno fa @capable.design e @urbnprvcy avevano già intuito la direzione in cui stavamo andando. Due brand che progettano felpe, maglie, giacche e accessori pensati per dialogare non soltanto con chi li guarda, ma anche con gli algoritmi che osservano gli spazi pubblici. Alcuni capi integrano pattern avversari direttamente nel tessuto, altri sfruttano stampe, tagli asimmetrici o LED a infrarossi per rendere più difficile il riconoscimento da parte di alcuni sistemi biometrici. 🔗 Link in bio per l’articolo completo

“Invisible to AI, visible to humans.” 🤖🔎 Meet @capable.design, the Italian fashion-tech label knitting “adversarial” AI patterns into clothes that scramble facial-recognition cameras - no balaclava required.  Founder Rachele Didero’s logic is unnervingly simple, “I can change my name, but I cannot change my fingerprint-or faceprint.” And on consent? “In the digital world, we have the opportunity to say yes or no to cookies. But in the physical world, we might not even know there’s a camera,” she told CONE Magazine. Tested against the YOLO detection system, the garments read as “dogs, zebras, or giraffes” instead of you. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to share something close to my heart at @futurepixelhouse x @sxsw 🌊 We’re more distracted than ever. Yet we keep designing for more. My talk was a case for the opposite. Strip away the unnecessary. Keep only what’s needed. Let nature be our teacher. I left the audience wondering— whether as a designer or even just a consumer of products — to ask ourselves “is it adding value to my life or adding more noise?” And “does it allow me to be more present or more distracted?” I shared a personal project of mine as a case study to that philosophy — an underwater communication device built on the idea that sometimes more often than not, the best signals and notifications is a quiet one. A pizza box. For a fashion-tech startup that makes knitwear that protects you from facial recognition cameras. Of course it was a pizza box. It screams “Made in Italy” without saying it. And the moment you open it, a round mirror reflects your face. The face the garment protects when worn. This is the crowdfunding packaging we designed for @capable.design in 2023.
