Montgomery County has money. These kids have nowhere safe to go.

“Don’t drop me off yet.” Children are asking a trusted adult to keep driving because they don’t want to go home.

At the State of Mid-County Communities Summit, Isabella with Street Outreach Network made it plain: she cannot do this work alone. Where is the investment in the people our children already trust?

Before the drug use, there was a child carrying hunger, isolation, crowded housing, and responsibilities no child should have to carry. How many adults saw the struggle before someone offered a pill?

At The State of Mid-County Communities Summit Nora Morales from Identity, Inc asks us to see the child before we judge the behavior. Her scenario traces a devastating path from unmet needs to addiction, then exclusion from the very places that should provide support.

Montgomery County, where is the urgency while these children are still asking for help? If our response is to push them out once their suffering becomes disruptive, who exactly are we protecting? Dayvon Love, @westbaltimorelove Director of Public Policy, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, articulates the position that confronting white supremacy requires Black institutional power.

Seeking recognition of our humanity will not deliver justice. Organizing, controlling our institutions, and investing in Black communities’ capacity to wield power must be the priority.

Who is raising the children while their parents work two or three jobs?

Military veteran and retired Montgomery County fire captain Dave Kennedy, owner of Rec-Mode Fitness brings lived experience to that question. His father died when he was in fifth grade. His mother worked. The streets helped raise him.

At The State of Mid-County Communities Summit, his challenge was clear: officials say they love the work, but where is the funding? Black boys need mentors, and the people showing up for them need resources.

Montgomery County, make your budget a moral document.

Not much has changed. How do I know? Because I work with families like this every single day.

Soon to be Dr. Isabella Wise tells her story of being pushed out of MCPS and how @donchancleta787 saved her life… literally. They are with Montgomery County Street Outreach Network. All I can think about is what if?

Our school district has not kept up with the educational needs of its community. It is still functioning as the Montgomery County of the past. Too many Black and non-native English speaking children cannot read.

Our children are being failed and we should be up in arms that they take our money and do not deliver year after year. #mcps #montgomerycounty #montgomeryvillage #gaithersburg #rockville

If Black people are at the top, what is the problem? @zsj__40 co-founder and co-executive director of @racialjusticenow talks about her work and why she does it.

Many of the “Top Dogs” in leadership are Black in Montgomery County, MD. Elected officials, county, government directors, the Black who’s who occupy the top spaces.

Yet, only 38% of Black children are reading on grade level. Half of the defendants in our court system are Black. Black boys are 87% of those in juvenile detention centers. 50% of those counted as homeless last year were Black men.

No public outcry. Black people don’t matter.

The data tells it all but there is no targeted intervention geared to the Black experience in Montgomery County. #blackexperience #montgomerycountymd #gaithersburg #rockville #montgomeryvillage

I appreciated the opportunity to attend the State of Mid-County Communities Summit at Quince Orchard High School, hosted and moderated by Tiffany Kelly.

One thing continues to stand out to me: we need to do a better job of listening to our young people. They are bright, connected, informed, and deserve a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect them.

The same is true for the Black and Brown communities we advocate for. My job is to listen to all voices, understand their experiences, and work toward policies that can have the greatest positive impact on our students, families, educators, and community.

Thank you @iamtiffanykelly for hosting this important summit that brought attention to the PEOPLE who've been left behind and marginalized at your inaugural mid-county summit (Mid-County Democratic Breakfast club)in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

It was my honor to participate on the panel that centered the Black experience in this part of "progressive, liberal" Montgomery County, Maryland.

I am glad to learn that my comments and @westbaltimorelove remarks had people "clutching their pearls." 💪🏾🤣

GOOD! People are DONE with business as usual. Gaslighting and playing in our faces while they continue to cater to the billionaire class in the region.

It's predictable that the city of Gaithersburg elected leadership got up and left right in the middle of the program. Right before our panel that centered Black people's experience in @midcountymoco. The hate is REAL in how they govern.

2-0!! 🥊⚡️

Another one in the books. I want to thank everyone who came out, supported me, and believed in me throughout this journey. Seeing so many familiar faces in the crowd meant more than you know. And a huge thank you to Coach Randolph, Coach Mike, Coach Dave, Coach Tony, and Eric. I truly couldn’t have done this without you guys. Thank you for the time, work, guidance, and belief you’ve put into me. I’m grateful to have you all in my corner. 🥊
The work continues. This is only the beginning.
