Another favourite theme this week – family, and specifically, all kinds of families. I loved going through our shelves and seeing what fitted the brief this week, and (and I really like this) there were so many to choose from. It’s also a great way of seeing where the gaps still are!

Everyone loves an autumn book reel and autumn is my favourite season for children’s picture books! The whimsical illustrations, warm colour pallets and heartwarming, funny and meaningful stories are all so beautiful. Some of these are old favourites, others are new ones that we’ve added to our collection this year. One thing they all have in common is that we love to read them again and again. What ones do you like or would love to read? 🍁🍂🌰

Our #SundayBedtimeStory choice this week is a double whammy…

Not only have we shared a review for this fabulous book but it’s also the feature for our first episode of Books That Help Storytime which you can find on our website now!

A huge thank to you @frances_tosdevin for sharing this with us and @andersenpress for their permission to post.

THE REALLY BEAUTIFUL THING (Frances Tosdevin, Ali Pye)
@alipyeillo

The Really Beautiful Thing (Andersen, 2025) is a captivating cautionary tale that warns of greed, consumerism and failing to appreciate the beauty all around… until it is too late.

Squirrel becomes enamoured with a Really Beautiful Thing and despite not knowing much about it, he sacrifices his comfortable sofa, his well-stocked fridge and even the home he shares with his friends. However, Squirrel soon realises the Really Beautiful Thing is actually rather useless. The narrative is a poignant reminder of the pitfalls of materialism and the importance of appreciating what we have - happiness isn’t found in possessions but in meaningful connections.

The vibrant and engaging illustrations complement the word-perfect storytelling, bringing the characters and their emotions to life in an accessible and enjoyable way for young readers.

Check out @educa8wirral for more bedtime story inspiration.

I love a Hitchin Friday! Always lots going on and lots of people around, especially on a sunny one ☀️

Also love my Hitchin t-shirt from our friends @visithitchin - doing whatever they can to tell the world what a brilliant place Hitchin is!

Thanks to these fab Hitchin businesses for your time to talk about books this week, you’ll see more reels popping up very soon from @buff_and_bare @farleyshairsalon @sankara_imports_uk and our MP @alistairstrathern If you’d like to take part in our campaign and tell us what you’re reading, drop me an email nextpagebooks@outlook.com #goallin

And belated thanks to our author friends for picking up a ‘ask me what I’m reading’ badge and sharing what they’re reading @catiewilkins @frances_tosdevin

And a very happy 40th birthday to the gang at @greyshairdressing 🎂

If anyone else (readers, authors, parents, business owners…) would like a badge, pop in to grab one from us in the shop and share online what you’re reading, we’d love to hear from you. The badges are flying out of the shop and popping up in all sorts of fab places - let us know if you see one and have an interesting bookish chat!

Finally, our FREE sessions funded by @penguinukbooks as part of the #nationalyearofreading are going so well! Over 100 free books given to Hitchin kids so far, about 300 books to go… if you’re waiting to sort a date with me, please remember they have to be completed by the end of the year so email me soon @go_all_in_2026

Happy Friday! #visithitchin #hitchin #hitchintown

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A Light in the Autumn Night, written by @frances_tosdevin and illustrated by @sophiaoconnorillustration , is a gorgeous Halloween woodland adventure.

Little velvety Mole is scared of the dark, but he bravely helps his friends by lighting their candles. When Mole sets off into the night to make sure his friends are safe, he becomes lost in the dark wood. The shadows and noises are frightening, but his friends soon find him, light the way home and show him the beauty of nighttime.

It’s a beautifully illustrated triumph of a book — warm, cosy and reassuring.

The perfect story for a chilly autumn night, with a cup of warm milk before bedtime.
