Remembering Nadia & Revisiting “Mask”
Pic 1: The Post-It Note
“EVeRY THiNG MeaNs Something...”
This post-it note, locked in a vault, was a final message from my sister Nadia. Years after she passed, a key addressed from her in China arrived in the mail, sending my older sister and me on a journey to an Ohio bank vault to find her words. It was like she was still writing to me beyond the veil.
Today marks six years since she passed. I continue to navigate the grief of losing a sibling who struggled in a paralleled way.
Pic 2: The Mask
In her memory, I’m revisiting “Mask,” the song co-written with Nigel Hemmye. The lyric “truth in your loss” has never been more real. I’m currently focused on working on a stripped-down, string arrangement with @sixmilestrings.
The Original: Find “Mask by Greater Alexander x NYDGE @nydgemusic” on all streaming sites.
This photo is from the original video, made in Detroit at @stephengarciamusic’s home, put forth by @jaycurtismiller, and funded by @assemblesound. Huge thanks to @aleclacasse for the wood-carved mask and @coriwise for the photography and assistance! (Flip through for a few behind-the-scenes shots.)
The original video is currently only found on Facebook/Meta. It was once on YouTube, but I haven’t been able to find an uploaded version on other platforms.
Pic 3: Eyes On Music
Bonus Listening: @nydgemusic produced a podcast episode dissecting how we put the original song together! The episode includes my choral sampled voice excerpt. Search: “Eyes on Music // On Process.”
Do You Want to Hear the String Arrangement?
I feel this new string version of “Mask” will be worth sharing.
Comment below if you want to hear this stripped-down string arrangement released!

🚀 17 preorders down, 983 to go! Help me hit 1,000 by March 20, 2025 for Let Love In — and fight Spotify’s new rule withholding royalties from songs under 1k monthly streams. 💿

🎧 Half the album is FREE to stream first. Your $1.31 preorder supports my music AND Detroit’s @greaterimpacthouse (a community project I’ve hustled for since 2018). 🌟

⏳ Price jumps to $1.79 in 48 days (1 month, 20 days—spring’s coming!). $207.41 raised — add your $1.31 or share to spark a #LetLoveIn wave!

👉 Support + stream: https://greateralexander.bandcamp.com/album/let-love-in

PSA: After you’ve tossed cash at @boniver’s fABLE (yes, spelled artistically 🎨) or wondered why @jagjaguwar still bets on CDs 🤔… spare a buck for the little greater guy swimming upstream in this tsunami of pre-spring releases. 🌊

Why?

• 🎵 Beat Spotify’s greed
• 🏠 Build a Detroit dream
• 💛 Prove tiny ripples > algorithms

A ghostly pause…Before you scroll down endlessly for the next minute… swipe left.

4 years ago we started something that continues to carry us with more support each year.

This year we are dedicating time to bash and smash a few walls on the first wall to make an open space for an accessible kitchen. We are thankful for John Katona @jknotkiddingstudios for offering us insight on how to properly proceed.

Our sponsors for food this year (and every year thus far) are Franklin Cider Mill @theftanklincidermill with additional sponsorship from National Coney Island @nationalconeyisland - We’ll also have bashing and smashing tunes gifted by @petercroce_rsd and @eddielogix of @rocksteadydisco

The event is about 24 hours away.
Come on out Tuesday October 18th 2022 beginning at 6p. Detroit time.

Thanks to everyone that came out for the 6th season of @theacousticguitarproject here at the @greaterimpacthouse.
.
Over 30 artists and 8 years of creating songs with the @minorbird_ TAGP Detroit guitar. This project always excites me each year. If you want to apply to receive the guitar next, look for applications to open up around late September 2022. Here’s to a warmer space with a new HVAC system next year.

It’s been a long time coming and this one will be extra intimate. Really excited to share songs in a forest with @ohlymusic and @chrisdupontmusic. Come enjoy an outdoor show at an undisclosed location. Purchase tickets and you’ll receive the location 24 hours before the day of the show. Tickets are pretty limited. I’d love to sell this out early and bring a smile to @natedorough. Let’s dedicate time this summer to bring back live public shows. Link in bio.

This photo was taken by @meganmcisaac on October 6th 2019. Little did I know of how much loss I would experience within the next year: from losing my sister to suicide, to the pandemic, to friends passing away and former girlfriends passing away, and even losing this little garden bear...
.
.
This Friday (Hallow’s Eve) the doors to the @greaterimpacthouse will open up for a limited night tour of all the Shadow Boxes created alongside each song for “Let Love In”. If you’re curious to explore, there are pre-sale tickets to keep a minimum amount of tours going. I will honour the passing of my sister by telling stories and sing songs at 9pm. Here’s to seeing some of you.

Good morning my dear friends on Instagram, Patio Set is LIVE as of midnight last night! Stream it on Apple Music, Spotify, etc. For anyone who buys the album on Bandcamp, you’ll also get access to “Pixelate,” an exclusive bonus track 🕺🏻

Thanks so much to everyone who has already bought the album and shared your thoughts 🙏🏻 It means a lot to have your support, especially for this project which has been a labor of love for me during these fucked up times we’re living in.

Thanks so much again to @jayeprime and @greatermusic for lending their time and talents to the record, to @sirwoodren for taking this from a decent album to a professional-ass project, and to @robdepollo for his exceptional art direction (and feedback/collaboration during the recording process). I could go on and on about how much you all added to this project, and I definitely will in future posts. 🔥

Anyhow, happy listening on this labor day weekend.

Much love ❤️
