#SceneNowEvents: Ward Radio – an independent community radio project from Alexandria, centered around music and the exchange of sounds from across the region – is touching down at tRoom in Garden City for their latest event, marking their first takeover in Cairo.

Taking place on Friday, October 2nd, the lineup includes names such as Hwa Fi Eh, Karamell, Ouella, Malalaalaaa with special guest Goubi, and Bader Shashit B2B 5amaseen.

@SceneNoise #NewNoise: In our latest instalment of Rap of the Week, we round up the tracks cutting through the region’s rap and hip-hop landscape this week, with picks from Shbash, The Synaptik and Hala Sherif.

Moroccan rapper Tchubi delivers ‘KSSIRI’, a hard-hitting trap cut made with ONZY and lifted from his new album, A Man With a Gun. Palestinian artist Shamaly returns with ‘Too Reall’, while Lebanese rapper Billy Tstrk takes a rougher route on the abrasive, grunge-tinged ‘Ma Tensine’.

Meanwhile, Palestinian-Jordanian rapper Shbash leans into industrial textures and ominous trap on ‘System’, while Egyptian rapper Hala Sherif joins forces with Moroccan-Egyptian producer Ouella for ‘ENTA’, a drum ’n’ bass-rap hybrid that pushes her sound into more frenetic territory.

The last heatwave of the season to the airwaves with 9 incredible talents and emerging sounds from around the world, from Lebanon to Morocco, Germany to Mexico, all connecting through Alexandria, Egypt.

We’re starting with something special from our lovely friend @fathalla.lp Gheir Elhob is his debut EP, exploring what comes after love, longing, nostalgia, escape, confusion, and the search for something else. For Ward, he’s also bringing exclusive new tracks and an unreleased single, all sound-designed and produced by himself.

Then we slow things down with our resident @radioamorr , returning with heavenly tunes and beautiful Arabic vocals, before @karamellmusic takes us somewhere else with a live set of Egyptian electronic sounds from his own productions.

Casablanca-born @ouellaaaaa follows with rhythm, bass and percussion, bringing his Moroccan and Amazigh roots into high-pressure club energy.

We’ve also been waiting for this one: @cherrychills_ finally takes her self-produced live project out of the bedroom and into the world. Built from her own productions and experiments, we’re proud to have one of its first broadcasts right here on Ward.

@eshkounjayofficiel comes back with his show Eshkounjay International Flight and invites @djbarbarella_ the Tunisian-born, Mexico City-based DJ, producer and visual artist. Together, they travel between Arabic music, Latin rhythms, techno, disco, acid, jazz, funk and worlds in between. From the medinas to the underground, this flight is taking us somewhere between everywhere and nowhere at once.

Our Alexandria family member and sound master @a1musiic takes over next, connecting familiar and unexpected sounds with no fixed formula, just a flow built for the moment.

@x_oec , Egyptian-raised and Germany-based, brings UK sounds, hardgroove, Egyptian and Brazilian influences together for a high-energy journey across cultures and tempos.

And to close this very hot night, we’re celebrating an emerging talent we’re genuinely excited about: @heemoooooo_ Born and based in Cairo, the DJ and producer brings sweaty grooves and raw energy.

Nine different worlds. One radio. No borders.

TINIRI by @ouellaaaaa is the opening track of his newly released EP SHILHA Vol. 02., which came out only last week. Meaning “desert” in Amazigh, the track is built around an indigenous vocal from an Amazigh Souss woman. Folkloric elements, including the guellal, are woven into a frame of chopped breaks and catchy basslines, creating a sound that feels equally firmly rooted as it does forward-moving.
