Meunier as a Solo Artist in Champagne 🍾 🇫🇷

What happens when Meunier takes centre stage? Our recent Weinakademiker Club tasting offered a compelling answer: remarkable diversity, precision and an impressive ability to age.

Across different terroirs – from chalk to sand – and with very different approaches in the cellar, including élevage both with and without oak, Meunier showed just how versatile it can be. The resulting Blanc de Meuniers ranged from tight and mineral to broader, more vinous expressions, while consistently delivering character and quality.

One of the highlights was an extraordinary bottle from @champagne_demiere, vintage 1975, disgorged in 1980 – still alive, complex and beautifully expressive. A striking demonstration of Meunier’s often underestimated longevity.

The conclusion? There is no single blueprint for great Blanc de Meunier. Terroir, élevage and time can lead to very different interpretations – and at the highest level, the results are outstanding.

A big thank you to our very own @la_madame_meunier - Jelena van Eerdenburg - whose expertise, depth of knowledge and enthusiasmc guided us brilliantly through the evening.

Meunier clearly deserves more than the role of being the supporting actor in a blend.

Another benchmark Riesling joins the cellar: the 2022 Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck GG @weingut_sf

Led by the exceptionally talented Tim Fröhlich @timfrohlich , Schäfer-Fröhlich has established itself as one of Germany’s most respected estates and a global reference point for dry Riesling. The winery’s philosophy is all about expressing terroir with maximum clarity, producing wines that combine intensity, precision and remarkable elegance.

Felseneck, located in the village of Bockenau in the Nahe, is widely regarded as one of Germany’s greatest vineyards. Its steep slopes of blue slate, quartzite and volcanic rock create wines of extraordinary minerality, energy and complexity. Few sites are capable of translating their terroir into the glass as clearly as Felseneck.

The 2022 vintage is a stunning expression of this legendary vineyard. Aromas of citrus zest, grapefruit, white peach and crushed stone are complemented by smoky, saline notes and incredible freshness. Concentrated yet beautifully refined, the wine delivers layer upon layer of mineral-driven complexity, finishing with the precision and tension that have become signatures of both Felseneck and Tim Fröhlich.

Critics were highly enthusiastic, with scores reaching 98 points and widespread praise for the wine’s purity, focus and exceptional balance. While already captivating today, this is undoubtedly a bottle for the long term, with the structure and depth to evolve gracefully for decades.

A true Grand Cru Riesling and another exciting addition to the cellar.
