Creating change is one of the hardest things we face in life. We get content. Typically where we are content is where we feel safe. Change represents the unknown. The unknown can be scary. Even though we often want to create change, we are scared of failure, we are scared of wondering, if we have what it takes to accomplish the change, and we are scared of wondering if we can remain consistent and not let ourselves down. But the good news is, we can micromanage change to make it feel safer and more accomplishable. Take small steps. We grow where we feel a little uncomfortable. Great things happen in that space. Give yourself a chance. Respect yourself enough.

✨ Meet Dr. Man! ✨

Come with us and Explore Eastchester as we step inside one of Tuckahoe’s standout fitness spaces, Transform Fitness Training & Recovery, to meet Dr. Man, a professional physical therapist with a holistic approach to healing, movement, recovery, and performance.

With a diverse background and a true understanding of the body as a whole, Dr. Man looks beyond simply treating the issue in front of him. His approach focuses on assessment, education, progression, and understanding the entire body so that patients and clients have the tools and knowledge to work toward their goals — rather than leaving those goals on the table.

But this is just the introduction. 👀

In our next video, I’ll be going through a full assessment with Dr. Man, giving you an inside look at his approach and what it’s like to work with him.

🎥 The full experience will also be coming to YouTube, so be sure to follow Explore Eastchester, turn on your notifications, and stay tuned for the next video!

Have you ever had a physical therapy assessment? Drop a 🩺 in the comments or tell us what you’d want to learn about!

Stop Looking Up During Your RDLs

The goal of an RDL isn’t just to bend over.

It’s to load the glutes (primarily) and hamstrings while maintaining a neutral spine.

One of the most common mistakes I see is people looking up throughout the movement.

When you do this, it often encourages your neck and lower back to extend together.

Instead of moving through your hips, you start borrowing motion from your spine.

The result?
❌ More stress on your low back
❌ Less effective glute loading
❌ A hinge that doesn’t feel quite right

Tips:
✅ Start tall with your head stacked over your torso.
✅ Let your head move naturally with your trunk instead of staring at the ceiling or a fixed point.
✅ Place one hand on your glute - you should feel it move back and lengthen as you hinge.

If you’re doing it right, you should notice more tension in your glutes - and less in your lower back.

Tag someone who always looks up during their RDLs👀

Sometimes you just need to take a step back and look at the bigger picture…

This patient is 9 months post-op but is still dealing with:
- Knee Pain
- Patellofemoral Syndrome
- Quadriceps Tendonitis
- Inflammation

We need to understand how the body is moving as a whole - not just at the knee.

Biggest thing I noticed? His center of mass is shifted far forward

Implications:
- Decreases ability to change directions & decelerate (think: would you lean forward or backward going down a hill)
- Increases stress to the anterior knee
- Compress the pelvis & ribcage ➡️ closing off mobility at both the hips & shoulders
- May increase resting tension through the rectus femoris (quad muscle), which could contribute to greater compressive forces at the patellofemoral joint (potentially)

After identifying these movement strategies, we worked on helping him access a different way to move:
- Shift his center of mass backwards
- Decrease his Patellofemoral Syndrome symptoms
- Access a lot more mobility at both the hips & shoulders

This is simply just step #1 - we still have a lot of work to do but it’s a step in the right direction.

Generating power in the transverse plan is imperative for athletic performance and everyday life. Here is a 3 step progression to train rotational power! Learn how to move fast and effectively as you rotate the hips, spine, and trunk. Medballs are a terrific tool to use to train this skill.

Unlock your hips. Athletes, fitness enthusiasts, general population, elderly movers… so much of movement originates from the hip complex. Hip capability is essential for everything from everyday movement as well as high level competition. Standing Hip CARs is a simple exercise to use daily multiple times a day to both optimize and improve the workspace of the hip.

⚾ Client Win

This professional pitcher had been dealing with right knee pain for years, and it had started to noticeably affect his throwing velocity.

Despite working with team doctors, physical therapists, other healthcare providers, and even undergoing surgery, the pain continued to linger.

During the All-Star break, he was able to stop by for just one session.

In that single visit we were able to:
✅ Improve Mobility
✅ Decrease Knee Pain
✅ Increase his Throwing Velocity by 2–3 MPH

Jobs not done yet but looking forward to ramping him back to full strength in the offseason.

If you’ve been dealing with knee pain that just won’t go away - even after trying multiple treatments - it may be time to take a different approach.

Calves always feeling tight no matter how much you stretch them?

If so, its time to start looking more upstream

Individuals stuck in extended postures will naturally shift their weight forwards

This forward shift (center of mass) results in constant tension in the calf muscles

So instead of always addressing the feet and ankles - you need to address the center of mass problem first

Your Posture changes your Foot Arch

Changes in Posture = Changes in your Center of Mass (where you’re leaning)

Changes in Center of Mass = Changes in Foot Arch Shape

If you’re stuck in one Posture for Too Long 👉 So will your Foot Arch

Goal: Improve the ability to create changes between different Postural Positions so you can move between both a Flat Arch & High Arch Shape (between Pronation & Supination)

➡️ That is how you’ll be able to create mobile and dynamic Feet & Ankles
