POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Just back from three days in the Sierra Norte. Day 1 we visited @sedayagaa in San Pedro Cojonos to see the whole process of silk cultivation, from the worms, to the spinning, weaving, and dyeing. We had a wonderful natural dye workshop and delicious home cooked meal. Thank you to @liz_c_01 and @wendosedoficial for hosting our unforgettable day! Deep in the mountains, we spent two nights in the cabins of El Carrizal sleeping with the warmth of an open fireplace and the silence of night. In the heart of the mountains we sketched, stitched, hiked and shared stories. Our meals came directly from this land. The fed us with tortillas from homegrown corn, and homemade bread with their homegrown wheat. Potatoes, beans, squash, wheat, salsa, eggs, chicken, apples, pears… all grown and prepared by our hosts. Food that nourishes the body and the soul. @miriamlcc1 and I love sharing these experiences with our amazing group of enthusiastic travelers through our tour: Impressions of Oaxaca through @travelingtradersbazaar We still have 7 more days to go!

Just floored (as usual) by the range and quality of colors pulled from the mushrooms our MyColores group pulled from the forest just this last week. With rainy season fully in action in Chiapas, the sheer volume of incredible Dye mushrooms has been overwhelming… both for our baskets and the back-up of waiting trays for the 24/7 dehydrator! So many thanks to the incredible knowledge of Maestra Alissa Allen (@mycopigments)… her expertise and teaching prowess if unparalleled! The most magical of these, of course, is the incredible ammonia-ferment brew of Teloschistes sp, a lichen that dyes pink, but changes to blue in the UV sunlight! The pink in the video herein became the blue on the rack! For Day 2, we are anticipating blues and greens from Hydnellum con crescents and Phellodon niger, purple from the long sought-after Hapalopilus, a mushroom that came to us from Bruch Reed (@bruchreed) who was secretly collection it for Kim (@thisiskimqi) for the last two years! Just stunning, this magical art form of mushroom dyes! #mexico #mushroom #dyeing adventure #chiapas

First foray day of MyColores with @the_fungivore and what a colorful day filled with dyers corts and cat cuddles. The walk was beautiful with a nourishing lunch and detailed fungi table talk with Ezequiel (@_fungaria_) and Alissa (@mycopigments) to kick off our week of mushroom foraging and natural dyeing in Chiapas. I can’t wait to see the rainbow we will make later this week!!!

What an absolutely fantastic day on Huitepec in San Cristobal. Foraging groups are always fun, but this particular group, mostly coming for the textile urges, was particularly fun yesterday, as so much of what mycologist Ezequiel Cruz (@_.ezequielcruz._), mushroom dye master Alissa Allen (@mycopigments) shared was brand new information for them. The colors of the mushrooms reflect the colors of this gorgeous Mexican state of chiapas: vibrant reds, purples, impossible combinations of muted green caps and too-bright-to-stare yellow pore surfaces. For all you neeerds, the day was dominated by Cortinarius and Boletaceae species, the two of these families together yielding upwards of 50 specimens… this included at least four species of the precious Dyers Cortinarius, a rare mushroom that exudes delight and joy when finding even one, and yesterday we found several and left several babies to grow larger! This is day one of three days for foraging, and we are stoked to search again today at Montetik, where Kim left a couple dyers polypore babies about a week ago… we shall see the progress! #mexico #mushroom #dyeing #adventure #chiapas

MyColores first day kicked off with a walking tour of San Cristobal to get our footing for a week in this beautiful town. One of many highlights was a special visit with Sergio Castro and his private museum of regional dress and artifacts - a beautiful introduction to the diversity of Mayan culture, language and dress here in Chiapas. At 88, every visit with Sergio is a window into a different world and also support his work to treat local burn victims. Enjoy this beautiful compilation from the group’s favorite photos - the art, architecture, animals, and all!! Tomorrow we are off to the forest for our first day of foraging for dye mushrooms to make our rainbow later this week! Mushlove!

Just over a week ago, we took our MycoChiapas group up to Huitepec, the ancient water volcano that towers above the Chiapas highlands, to explore the fungi there. Though we didn’t leave with a ton of any one thing, we didn’t manage to pull 133 species out of the duff and dirt in our 4 hour exploration! Check out the last two photos for a teaser of what we found (the formatting cut off some of the image, sorry!!). Today, we head back up the mountain with our MyColores mushroom dye group! I cannot wait to see what has changed, what has grown, and what else we find with our guide and mycologist Ezequiel Cruz, Msc. to see what we find just a little over a week of rain later!! Stay tuned! #mexico #mushroom #foraging #adventure #chiapas

We kicked off our first MyColores in Chiapas last night with an epic group of ladies, and a couple of Mushroom(dye)-adjacent partners with one of the best meals in the city: Tarumba (@tarumba.mx) and a simply gorgeous and delicious display of traditional ingredients reimagined, from hard-shell duck tacos to an over-the-top local cheese plate, cocktails with mumo and zucú (otherwise known as Hoja Santa and Chicatanaas!), delicious fish dishes at 7200ft elevation… wow.🤩 We are so excited to be hosting Alissa Allen for her 5th year in a row in Mexico to explore the mycopigments of chiapas (@mycopigments). Life is better when it is delicious AND colorful! #mexico #mushroom #foraging #adventure #chiapas

So many photos!! The Fungivore and Fungaria knocked it out of the park this year on our MycoChiapas adventure!! So thrilled to get host and spend so much more time with amazing mycologist Ezequiel Cruz(@_.ezequielcruz._) than our previous two years, his wealth of knowledge specifically of the local Funga (not to mention his wife Norlendy’s incredible knowledge of and dedication to slime molds, or myxomycetes, (@slimariumchiapaneco). Or as one of our group said, the true Slimon & Garfungal!…. Bwahahahahaha!. Of course we come for the mushrooms, but it is the people who leave the lasting memories on our trips, as so memorably mentioned by 4-time attendee Reema (@golcondajewelry): “At first I am all in for the mushrooms we are finding, but by the end, I just want to deepen these amazing friendships I’ve made!” Stay tuned for more food, fun and fungi these next couple days! And make sure to sign up for our 2027 season, which promises all kinds of new experts and adventures (link in bio!) #mexican #mushroom #foraging #adventure #chiapas

The Fungivore just wrapped up our MycoChiapas event with one of the best groups ever! What an amazing experience. And we could not have done it without our local partner Fungaria (@_fungaria_) and astounding mycologist Ezequiel Cruz (@_.ezequielcruz._ )! Laying out the species we’d found on a table to talk about each of our finds, Ezequiel created these digital images with the names of our finds (to the best of his up-to-date knowledge) and wow. May I present the first of 6 days of foraging in this way, and the day we collected both the least specimens, but also had the most unique day, with one single overlapping species from the Nagaño forests of Tuxtla Gutiérrez! #mexico #mushroom #foraging #adventure #chiapas

The rains were late to southern Mexico. September was quite bereft of mushrooms. But we are back, baby! The torrential downpours of late September and early October have brought a bounty of beautiful mushrooms. We have been piloting our incredible MycoChiapas adventure and somehow are just two days from@the finish line, already! Here are some teaser shots while I organize the massive volume of photos of people and mushrooms and funny bugs. #mexico #mushroom #foraging #adventure #chiapas
