Happy World Mushroom Day from the field! I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience nature and connect with fungi folks with @the_fungivore.

First foray day of MyColores with @the_fungivore and what a colorful day filled with dyers corts and cat cuddles. The walk was beautiful with a nourishing lunch and detailed fungi table talk with Ezequiel (@_fungaria_) and Alissa (@mycopigments) to kick off our week of mushroom foraging and natural dyeing in Chiapas. MyColores first day kicked off with a walking tour of San Cristobal to get our footing for a week in this beautiful town. One of many highlights was a special visit with Sergio Castro and his private museum of regional dress and artifacts - a beautiful introduction to the diversity of Mayan culture, language and dress here in Chiapas. At 88, every visit with Sergio is a window into a different world and also support his work to treat local burn victims.

Enjoy this beautiful compilation from the group’s favorite photos - the art, architecture, animals, and all!! Just over a week ago, we took our MycoChiapas group up to Huitepec, the ancient water volcano that towers above the Chiapas highlands, to explore the fungi there. Though we didn’t leave with a ton of any one thing, we didn’t manage to pull 133 species out of the duff and dirt in our 4 hour exploration! Check out the last two photos for a teaser of what we found (the formatting cut off some of the image, sorry!!).

Today, we head back up the mountain with our MyColores mushroom dye group! I cannot wait to see what has changed, what has grown, and what else we find with our guide and mycologist Ezequiel Cruz, Msc. to see what we find just a little over a week of rain later!! Stay tuned!

We kicked off our first MyColores in Chiapas last night with an epic group of ladies, and a couple of Mushroom(dye)-adjacent partners with one of the best meals in the city: Tarumba (@tarumba.mx) and a simply gorgeous and delicious display of traditional ingredients reimagined, from hard-shell duck tacos to an over-the-top local cheese plate, cocktails with mumo and zucú (otherwise known as Hoja Santa and Chicatanaas!), delicious fish dishes at 7200ft elevation… wow.🤩

We are so excited to be hosting Alissa Allen for her 5th year in a row in Mexico to explore the mycopigments of chiapas (@mycopigments).

So many photos!! The Fungivore and Fungaria knocked it out of the park this year on our MycoChiapas adventure!! So thrilled to get host and spend so much more time with amazing mycologist Ezequiel Cruz(@_.ezequielcruz._) than our previous two years, his wealth of knowledge specifically of the local Funga (not to mention his wife Norlendy’s incredible knowledge of and dedication to slime molds, or myxomycetes, (@slimariumchiapaneco). Or as one of our group said, the true Slimon & Garfungal!…. Bwahahahahaha!.

Of course we come for the mushrooms, but it is the people who leave the lasting memories on our trips, as so memorably mentioned by 4-time attendee Reema (@golcondajewelry): “At first I am all in for the mushrooms we are finding, but by the end, I just want to deepen these amazing friendships I’ve made!”

Stay tuned for more food, fun and fungi these next couple days! And make sure to sign up for our 2027 season, which promises all kinds of new experts and adventures (link in bio!)

The Fungivore just wrapped up our MycoChiapas event with one of the best groups ever! What an amazing experience. And we could not have done it without our local partner Fungaria (@_fungaria_) and astounding mycologist Ezequiel Cruz (@_.ezequielcruz._ )! Laying out the species we’d found on a table to talk about each of our finds, Ezequiel created these digital images with the names of our finds (to the best of his up-to-date knowledge) and wow.

May I present the first of 6 days of foraging in this way, and the day we collected both the least specimens, but also had the most unique day, with one single overlapping species from the Nagaño forests of Tuxtla Gutiérrez!

🍄 Los hongos están en todas partes… pero probablemente sabemos muchísimo menos de ellos de lo que imaginamos.

Además de formar parte de nuestros ecosistemas, algunas especies pueden producir pigmentos naturales que tienen aplicaciones sorprendentes.

Y esto apenas es una pequeña parte de todo lo que podemos descubrir cuando empezamos a mirar nuestro entorno de otra manera. 👀

Woooo!! Huge milestone! We’ve lived in Mexico now for 4.5 years. 4 years as temporary residents, and just this morning we received our permanent residency ID cards!

Tomorrow is Mexico’s Independence Day, September 16th! Tonight, there is celebration afoot..!
