We took on one of the most iconic songs in anime history, but we didn’t want to settle for just another cover.

“God Knows” is legendary for a reason, ever since Haruhi Suzumiya took the stage in 2006, this song has become a cultural sensation to anime fans around the world.

However, we always felt there was an opportunity to give English-speaking fans something more; an adaptation that captured the full meaning and emotional weight of the original lyrics, rather than being limited by the version we’ve come to know.

So we rewrote it. This isn’t just a cover, it’s a complete reimagining from the ground up that we believe does this unbelievable song even greater justice.

And we know, this is an incredibly bold undertaking and we know exactly what this song means to people, but we mean it when we say we wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t believe in what we were making.

You’re listening to God Knows by Shadow Realm, out now anywhere you listen to music. Let us know what you think.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya gave us one of the most iconic in-story performances of any anime adaptation ever. This song practically cultivated its own niche in the late 2000’s amassing over 100 million views on YouTube, becoming it’s own cultural sensation.

This Friday we’re bringing “God Knows...” back to the mainstream with own English adaptation.

🗓️ October 16th. Two days away. Streaming anywhere you listen to music.

We’ve been hard at work this year recording our catalog of unique English covers to prepare for a rollout release of a new song released each month for the coming months, and we knew we wanted to start with one of the most legendary songs in all of anime history, God Knows…

This track breaks our rule quite a bit. Although the original English dub technically has it’s own version and translation, we’ve always felt there was a gap between that and the original Japanese version written by Aki Hata. So we made our own to honor the spirit of the original and the legacy this song has left behind.

God Knows… from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya launches next Friday, October 16th on all platforms. You can presave it at the link in our bio!

“I would follow you no matter where you run to” 🎀

17 years ago today, on October 9th, the final episode of “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” aired, immediately following Haruhi’s canonical birthday.

For those who remember, this series was making waves throughout anime culture like few others before it.

For many people, “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” serves as a bit of a deep cut. But for those Y2K anime fans who remember, it was something special.

And then there was the insert song: “God knows…”

An entire song written for, performed, and animated as part of an episode of an anime. To this day, it remains one of the most memorable musical moments in anime history.

When we started Shadow Realm, we knew there wasn’t a world where the anime’s famous insert song, “God knows…,” didn’t become part of our catalog.

It’s one of those songs that means so much to so many people, and we knew we wanted to do it justice.

Our version isn’t exactly what you know, however. You see, one of the rules we set early on for Shadow Realm was this:

1. If a song had a native English translation; meaning the original creators or songwriters had written and performed their own version; that was the version we would perform.

“Closer,” “Chozetsu Dynamic!” and “Zenzenzense” from our debut EP; “The Other Side of the Sea” are all perfect examples of this.

2. If a song didn’t have an official English translation, Zack would write our own.

Our cover of “Again” from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a great example.

But “God knows…” was a little more complicated.

“God knows…” uniquely fell somewhere in the middle.

Rather than its original songwriter, Aki Hata, composing an English version, the lyrics for the official English dub were written and produced by the localization team so they would rhyme and match the mouth movements of the already animated performance.

It’s a pretty unique situation, and one that left us with a decision to make.

With respect to their team, we’ve always felt there was a gap between the version of the song Aki Hata wrote and the lyrics adapted for the official English dub.

Because of that, we chose to take our own spin on a song we adore so muc

“On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.” 💅

To some of you it’s Mean Girls day, to a certain set of brothers, it’s the day where they left the past behind and set out on a journey to get their bodies back.

For us, it’s the one year anniversary of the cover that changed everything. With almost half a million streams across all platforms in one years time, it’s impossible to undermine the impact it’s had on all of us and our careers.

Thank you for listening, and thank you for being here with us. We hope you enjoy our cover today as we celebrate the story that inspired it.

Happy Fullmetal Alchemist day!

We had a great time pulling out the acoustic guitars and stripping down some of our favorite songs this weekend at @pandafestpittsburgh! Thank you to their team for having us, and to everyone who watched us perform!

In a few weeks, we’re heading back to The Schoolhouse Recording Studio with @danielblakeproduction to record some of these unique acoustic versions we’ve all come to love so much.

After that we return to Virginia Nov. 6th-8th to takeover @nekocon_official! Lots of music to come in the coming months, we can’t wait to show you all what we’ve been working on.

There’s a reason they say “never skip this opening.” No other anime opening can hold a candle to Yu Yu Hakusho’s “Smile Bomb”.

It’s a timeless classic over thirty years that has kept generations after generations of anime fans bopping their heads and moving their hips.

Our cover is streaming now on all platforms. We hope you come see us play it live one day 💫

“Smile Bomb” first debuted on October 10, 1992, as the legendary opening theme song for the premier episode of the anime Yu Yu Hakusho.

That means it’s legacy has been around for 34 years inspiring generation after generation of anime fans. For us, it’s easily one of the most hype songs we perform, and watching @nokatoah play it’s guitar solo with his tongue never gets old.

How old were YOU were you when you first heard this GOAT of an anime opening?
