🌊 THE OTHER SIDE OF THE SEA 🌊

We are incredibly excited to announce that our debut EP release is on the horizon.

“The Other Side of the Sea” is a love letter to the anime songs that crossed the Pacific, consisting of eight English adaptations & OSTs that introduced entire generations to their favorite series. These are the songs that aired on Western television, soundtracked Saturday mornings, and helped anime find its footing on this side of the ocean.

Spanning decades of iconic series, this EP brings these songs together for a journey back to our youth to remind us where our stories began. Available everywhere on May 15th, the tracklist includes:

Every step we’ve ever taken has led us here. This part of our journey is the end.

We never anticipated these shows would turn into all of this. This release is more than an EP, this is a collection of songs that not only defined anime’s influence in Western culture, but also defined our journey as a band.

The Other Side of the Sea is a collection of songs that shaped Anime Night, that shaped the band we’ve grown to become, and shaped all of our lives as fans.

We worked incredibly hard to not only recreate these covers honestly and authentically, but to pay tribute to the original works—all while bringing it up to speed with modern production.

We hope you enjoy what we’ve built.

howdy, friends. I’ve finally found the energy to go out a lot more lately and do things besides working; it’s been really nice. I’ve also been taking extra time for myself as needed to simply just rest or disconnect from the world… turns out that’s an actual requirement, not a luxury. highly recommend taking care of yourself BEFORE burn out sends you spiraling. we’re not robots and if you’re like me your needs and capabilities are ever-shifting and somewhat unpredictable. don’t forget to check in with yourself before you’re overwhelmed. 🕯️✨

We took on one of the most iconic songs in anime history, but we didn’t want to settle for just another cover.

“God Knows” is legendary for a reason, ever since Haruhi Suzumiya took the stage in 2006, this song has become a cultural sensation to anime fans around the world.

However, we always felt there was an opportunity to give English-speaking fans something more; an adaptation that captured the full meaning and emotional weight of the original lyrics, rather than being limited by the version we’ve come to know.

So we rewrote it. This isn’t just a cover, it’s a complete reimagining from the ground up that we believe does this unbelievable song even greater justice.

And we know, this is an incredibly bold undertaking and we know exactly what this song means to people, but we mean it when we say we wouldn’t have done this if we didn’t believe in what we were making.

“I would follow you no matter where you run to” 🎀

17 years ago today, on October 9th, the final episode of “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” aired, immediately following Haruhi’s canonical birthday.

For those who remember, this series was making waves throughout anime culture like few others before it.

For many people, “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” serves as a bit of a deep cut. But for those Y2K anime fans who remember, it was something special.

And then there was the insert song: “God knows…”

An entire song written for, performed, and animated as part of an episode of an anime. To this day, it remains one of the most memorable musical moments in anime history.

When we started Shadow Realm, we knew there wasn’t a world where the anime’s famous insert song, “God knows…,” didn’t become part of our catalog.

It’s one of those songs that means so much to so many people, and we knew we wanted to do it justice.

Our version isn’t exactly what you know, however. You see, one of the rules we set early on for Shadow Realm was this:

1. If a song had a native English translation; meaning the original creators or songwriters had written and performed their own version; that was the version we would perform.

“Closer,” “Chozetsu Dynamic!” and “Zenzenzense” from our debut EP; “The Other Side of the Sea” are all perfect examples of this.

2. If a song didn’t have an official English translation, Zack would write our own.

Our cover of “Again” from Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a great example.

But “God knows…” was a little more complicated.

“God knows…” uniquely fell somewhere in the middle.

Rather than its original songwriter, Aki Hata, composing an English version, the lyrics for the official English dub were written and produced by the localization team so they would rhyme and match the mouth movements of the already animated performance.

It’s a pretty unique situation, and one that left us with a decision to make.

With respect to their team, we’ve always felt there was a gap between the version of the song Aki Hata wrote and the lyrics adapted for the official English dub.

Because of that, we chose to take our own spin on a song we adore so muc by @wegmills

when you propose a plan the night before and it actually works out. 🎢♥️💭💯👀 what could possibly be more fun than galavanting with your person, taking silly pictures, sharing snacks, drinking a speciality brew, and riding rollercoasters ‘til sundown? (well, maybe the beer not costing $15 + tax would be a little more fun. hehe.)

will I ever wait an hour in line for a haunted house again? no. probably not. do I love Kennywood enough to go again and brave the lines and the public? yeah, absolutely. ☺️

there’s no real agenda here or message I’m trying to spread besides these things make me happy and you should do more of what makes you happy, too. ♥️

I have been doing my best to make time for the things I love, no matter how silly or small, because life really is too short to be burnt out and bothered all of the time.

I love browsing old records and keepsakes without being rushed. I love real music made by real musicians and physical art made by artists. I love trying new foods, ordering what I want, and processing the flavors through a joyful shoulder shimmy (or full blown dinner performance depending on the day). I love photographing anything and everything that I find interesting, funny, or beautiful and not having the company I keep get bothered when I stop to figuratively smell the flowers. I love sampling limited edition flavors or trying new treats without worrying that it’s going to ruin my body or life. I love the small things that make being a person worth the nonsense in between.

time slows down when you’re doing what you love, don’t forget to revel in that. we all need more love, more joy, and less “how this presents”, especially when you’re an artist. 💯
