TECMN participated in a two-day strategic engagement convened by TAWLA in Dodoma on 29–30 September 2026, bringing together Government Ministries and key stakeholders to reflect on the ongoing reform of the Law of Marriage Act, 1971.

The engagement was also an opportunity to reflect critically on a central question: Where are we in the reform process, why has progress stalled, and what must we do differently to move forward?

TECMN remains committed to working with its members, Government institutions and partners to sustain momentum towards a legal framework that protects every child from marriage before the age of 18.

Wewe unasemaje? Weka maoni yako hapa chini 👇

“Child marriage can abruptly interrupt girls’ education and severely limit their future opportunities.”

Our Global Youth Ambassador, @monnynemes0305 , took this message to the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Pre-Session in Geneva, drawing from what she has witnessed through her advocacy work with girls and communities in Rukwa.

Representing the voices and experiences of young people from Tanzania, Monica called for 18 to be the minimum legal age of marriage, without exception, and for stronger legal protection of the Education Re-entry Framework so that pregnant girls and adolescent mothers can return to school, remain there and complete their education.

Young people are not waiting for decisions about their lives to be made without them. They are taking their experiences, priorities and solutions to the spaces where those decisions are made.

We have participated in the Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on the Law of Marriage Act, 1971, organized by the TECMN member @msichanainitiative recently in Dar es Salaam.

The dialogue brought together girls and key stakeholders to reflect on the Law of Marriage Act and discuss opportunities to strengthen legal and policy measures for protecting children and preventing child marriage.

Protecting girls from child marriage requires all of us to speak up, listen to girls’ voices, and advocate for laws and policies that uphold their rights.
