I recently had the opportunity to host the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s ASEAN Young Business Leaders at The Backyard.
.
From coaching people in gyms to sharing what I’ve learnt about building one, we spoke about the fitness industry in Malaysia, entrepreneurship and the opportunities for New Zealand businesses entering the market.
.
After 20+ years in fitness, I’ve learnt that being good at what you do and knowing how to build a business around it are two very different skill sets!
.
I’ve had to learn both. Sometimes the hard way. 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Pretty cool to now be sharing those experiences with other business leaders and even better reconnecting with an old school mate I hadn’t seen in 15 years! @lingy.au

📝10 things that took me 40 years to learn.

❤️Some things truly are worth waiting a little longer for.

🧱It’s never a failure, it’s learnings. Take the experience and mistakes while adding in my own wisdom and courage to start again.

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒They’ll remember the experience and learn the processes before being fixated on the timing.

💔Not every friendship needs to end badly for it to have reached its end.

💪🏼My goals have now shifted to longevity and sustainability. Ego has no place in this forum.

⚡️I’m learning to become more careful about who and what gets my energy.

🤷🏻‍♂️I can do things genuinely, treat people well and still get screwed. The most important lesson is to learn from it, don’t become it.

😂I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, but there’s a good chance that people who like me will stay and people who don’t…..I wouldn’t have liked them anyway. 😉

🕕If anything, I’m only halfway through this wonderful journey of life. I reckon I’m still warming up.

🫱🏼‍🫲🏽These days it’s less about proving something and more about having people I love, work I care about and having enough time to enjoy both.

⏰THE OTHER 23.🕰️

We often spend a lot of time showing the 1 hour we train.
The runs, the weights and the numbers.
But there are another 23 hours in the day that are just as important, if not, more important.
.
What we eat. How we recover. Work. Family. Sleep. And all the normal life stuff that doesn’t usually make the highlight reel.
So over the next few months, together with Jaya Grocer, I want to show you little more of that.
This isn’t about the “perfect” HYROX prep.
.
It’s actually how I’m preparing for my first Pro Singles at 40 years old while still running a business, coaching, being a loving husband and a dad.
.
Some of it will be useful.
Some of it Instagram probably won’t approve of. 😂
But that’s kind of the point.

Train for the hour. Live well for The Other 23.

🥹LEARNINGS🤥

I absolutely HATE airing dirty laundry on social media, that’s what anyone would say before airing their laundry. I’ve tried my hardest to resolve things behind closed doors but these business lessons need to be learnt from anyone as naive as myself when first starting out.
.
Since departing my first gym business venture, it’s been a steep learning curve. It got to a point where I wanted to leave the country and start all over again.
.
I’ve talked to people who have lost plenty more money than myself, lost plenty more time than me but I feel inspired seeing them still succeed.
.
Sometimes it’s not the idea that was the problem, but the people who you’re building it with. Just like a flower, it won’t grow in a dark and wet environment, you need to change its environment to really see it grow.
.

Second chances are hard to come by so when one comes along, grab it with both hands and run with it! 🏃🏻‍♂️💨

A terrible and traumatic first business experience which came with many lessons! Guess I was naive to think investors would have genuine intentions, these lessons came with a heavy price and I almost left the country. Stay tuned as I reveal more truths about what happened behind the scenes and continues to happen today……☕️

I’ve always tried to stay true to my morals and philosophy, coming in with a new headspace and with some prior learnings, I knew I still had the urge and the drive when o laid eyes on this old factory building.

A lot of the time I’m a “WHAT’S NEXT?” type of guy. I probably don’t spend enough time reflecting. But as I post this post…… gaaaawwwd dam I’m proud! 🥹

Budgets suck. But best to stay within your means than to spend what you don’t have.
.
A lesson my previous investors should have learnt.🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

As an entrepreneur, the thought of giving up runs through your mind more times than you would like. It’s like a little voice that comes out trying to bring you down……it’s important when you hear this tiny little voice creep up on you that you tell it to “SHUT THE HELL UP!”
