There are only a couple of weeks left to get your entries in for our Wigan Borough Icons competition! ✨

Our Wigan Borough Icons competition is BACK for another year, giving children aged 5–11 the chance to design a light-up artwork celebrating a local hero from across the borough. And new for this year we have a VERY special judge on board - Wigan’s very own Richard Ashcroft!

You child can choose anyone they think deserves to be celebrated. A footballer. A musician. A scientist. Someone from history. Someone making a difference today. Or even a much-loved community hero.

In previous years, winning designs have celebrated icons including Ella Toone, Crusty the Pie, Andy Farrell, Keely Hodgkinson, and Richard Ashcroft so for 2026, we’re looking for brand-new Wigan Borough icons!

To enter, draw a full-length picture of your chosen icon and send us a photo of the drawing to wiganboroughicons@gmail.com ✉️ We also need your name, age, postcode and contact details.

✉️ Entries can also be posted to:
Wigan Borough Icons
Turnpike Gallery

Three winning designs will be selected by a panel of judges, including @hackertdog, Blackpool Illuminations, @thingsthatgoonthings, Antonio Capelao from Soho Kids Xmas Lights, and new for 2026 - Richard Ashcroft, before being transformed into full-size neon artworks for Light Night Wigan 2026.

📆 Deadline: 29th September 2026.
