It’s a pleasure for us to introduce our next AFF Board Member, Anthony McGinnis Jr.🌊

Anthony McGinnis Jr. is an experienced marine biologist and current lab technician at the CSULB Shark Lab. He possesses a strong background in community ecology, physiological ecology, and the movement behaviors of Elasmobranchs. His work has taken him from the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach, to research expeditions in Costa Rica and Catalina Island, where he has gained hands-on experience in safe fish handling, drone-based bathymetry mapping, and studying nurse shark aggregation sites.

He holds certifications such as an FAA unmanned drone pilot license, AAUS scientific diver
certification, and various fish/reptile handling licenses, which make him well-prepared for
fieldwork and advanced marine research. This summer, he was selected to be a part of a
NSF-LTER Funded project with Dr. Caitlin & Peggy Fong from UCSB to carry out a coral reef
restoration project in Moorea, Tahiti.

Currently, he is pursuing his graduate studies at Moss Landing Marine Lab in consortium with
California State University of Monterey Bay, in Dr. Salvador Jorgensen’s Ocean Predator
Ecology Lab. His research will focus on using historical data collected by the CSULB Shark Lab
in SoCal to conduct a regional comparative analysis of juvenile white sharks (JWS) potentially
spreading their distribution further north of the California Current Large Marine Ecosystem
(CCLME) in the Central-Northern California region. His passion for marine ecosystems and
predator-prey interactions drives his commitment to contribute to the understanding and
conservation of marine life, with a goal of spreading this knowledge to local communities.

💡Fun Fact: Anthony and the Shark Lab deployed acoustic tags on 29 white sharks in the year of
2024 ranging from Santa Barbara to San Diego, with plans to tag even more sharks in 2025🦈 by @vibants

Your friendly neighborhood Black marine biologist reporting for duty ✊🏾🫡

Want to give a HUGE thanks to @lebeauski and the board members of @aquariumpacific 💙 for having the ultimate trust in me to be a part of the African American Scholar Program. I am eternally grateful for having the opportunity to be in this 2023 cohort of exceptional Black Marine Biologists. I’ll be able to have the necessary resources to conduct future research, network with other remarkable like-minded individuals & spread awareness to our local communities that it’s not an impossible task to be a minority in the marine biology field! Being chosen to be a face for African Americans in marine biology means the absolute world to me and I will unquestionably represent us well! Thank you so much to my close friends, family members, and colleagues that’s continuously supported me throughout my journey 🙏🏽🌊🦈 taken in Aquarium of the Pacific by @vibants
