🌱I am honored to have received an @berrieawardnj Making a Difference award in the category of transformational leadership for my work with @mevoearth . It has been 9 wonderful years working at MEVO cleaning up illegal dumping, building trails, farming, working with thousands of volunteer and hundreds of interns and of course many teams of amazing staff over the years.

⭐️This award while given to me, really is also given to MEVO and everyone who has put in the hard work and heart work to make our boots on the ground, hands in the dirt work possible! by @violetreed

In September, the environmental not-for-profit I direct, @mevoearth learned that the lease on our second Farm, Lovewell Farm in Mahwah, was terminated. It has been sold for residential development.

The loss of this farm is significant. It took years, from 2017 on, to restore the soil, time, effort, and considerable funding to build a deer fence, perform a surprise environmental remediation, and more.

We didn’t rush the process at Lovewell; we spent time learning the land, reducing weed pressure, understanding how it drained, and discovering what crops like to grow there best. On top of all this, we were farming on 12ft 12-foot-high leaf pile from the 80s, and most of the leaves had not broken down yet! Lovewell was built 100% by our small staff, volunteers, and interns, and represents the efforts of many.

We had 4 wonderful years of enjoying its full growing capacity and are leaving behind a mature farm and newly fruiting asian pear and peach trees. This cuts our growing and programming capacity in half for our farming program as we head into 2026.

However, with loss comes the ability to hone in on current programs and expand to new ones! We are raising $30,000 for our end-of-year fundraiser as we look towards 2026.

As part of our campaign, we are raising funds to help us repair a large and abandoned greenhouse right down the road from our Fresh Roots Farm in Mahwah, reinvigorate our Stag Hill Trash Cleanup Program, where we’ve removed an estimated 850,000lbs of illegal dumping, and to continue our summer trail building work into the fall season. The photo below focuses on turning Lovewell from an abandoned plot to a thriving farm.

Whether you can give $5 or $50, every dollar is a gift and will be used well!

If you got this far, thank you!!

Headed to South Africa 🇿🇦 to visit my WhatsApp pen pal @skyemallac. After meeting in the Costa Rican jungle six years ago.

We braved the @originfest

We cooked a lot of meals, spent many days at the beach, and hung out with so many amazing people.

I befriended many dogs.

We ended the trip at a game park and witnessed elephants, warthogs, and zebras at the waterhole. Most importantly…we saw a baby elephant 🐘 by @violetreed
