Did I make a mistake?

Iโ€˜ve been asked and questioned so many times, why after establishing myself in an exclusive art world, Iโ€˜ve stepped off. Did I lose my mind to spend time in a jungle sitting and drumming by the fire instead of dancing at Venice Biennale or Art Basel openings?

Well, let me tell you something. Something really deep and important to me.

1. First of all, Iโ€˜ve never left the art world. Itโ€™s impossible. Art is within me, I always loved it and nothing can take it away from me. Yes, Iโ€˜ve gathered a lot of experience, contacts and expertise that would make my life easier continuing going from one artfair to another instead of pausing. Instead of asking the ones who were sitting by the fire and knew something beyond the visible, whatโ€™s the meaning of life.

The ones who are involved into the art world, know exactly what I am talking about. Itโ€™s fun, we love art, but the bizz has no soul and we keep on going in circles around the globe meeting same people all over, seeing same shows in HK and NYC.

The ones who just get their hand on collecting, visiting galleries and museums - I am encouraging you to ask yourself โ€” why are you all of a sudden interested in art?
Well, the answer is simple. Same as with spirituality - the global interest is growing. Global consciousness is arising. Art is same as spirituality.

Absolutely and completely same thing that you can not describe in words, buy nor touch. There is a whole bizz about the both fields, marketing plant medicine, promising awakening after one pill ๐Ÿ„ same as getting rich by buying whatever artist as an investment.

2. I had to take a break to come back with a different perspective. Both subjects are sacral to me - the true art and spiritual matters, evolving and liberation. Iโ€˜ve always paired things in a novel way, if some of you remember @ephemeraldinner . This is what I am gonna do now, but this time not alone. In a team, family, community - call it the way you wish, itโ€™s time for unity in age of separation. If you are still here, reading this line - this is a sign.

Reach out, weโ€˜ll make amazing things happen.

So, did I make mistake by abandoning the social position I already had? ๐Ÿ‘‡ taken in Samadhi Sacred Valley by @yuliaworld

Shot in snowy land in December 2023 with the help of professional stuntmen, I literally set myself on fire.
The poem is by Nazim Hikmet.
You can read the full description in the carousel or via the link in my bio.

This work symbolizes everything I could not express in words and marks the most significant step in my life for today - a moment of rebirth and truth.

I can no longer hide it.
I have been an artist all my life.
Despite having training and studies in art history, a successful career as a curator, art writer, and educator, and meeting some of the best artists of our times, I did not feel ยซenoughยป to call myself an artist.

What a silly game of mind and ego.

In less than 20 seconds, this artwork metaphorically showcases the process of the last 4 years of being literally reborn through a painful process of burning internally and externally, peeling off the old to make space for the new, and setting up the light through the darkness, like a Phoenix that burns to ashes but starts a new.

Your word means a world to me. Please welcome the real me. by @yuliaworld

Iโ€™M DESPERATE โ€” Signs that Say What You Want Them to Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You to Say - Iโ€™m Desperate, 1992 - 1993

In 1992, British artist Gillian Wearing approached strangers on the streets of London, asking them to write whatever they wanted on a piece of paper and pose for a photograph.

2 days of August that keep me going:

Nomadism has been a theme in my life and artistic practice for a long time

Belonging โ€” What is home, besides the only one we all share โ€” the Earth itself?

Rooting. How do I put down roots if I am not a tree?

A research trip into the Taurus Mountains, where some Yoฬˆruฬˆk communities still follow a nomadic way of life end of august

โ€œNow thatโ€™s the artistโ€™s function: to take the experience. With respect to the sociology, to what society do you belong? The society of the planet is the only valid one now. It is the only one thatโ€™s valid.

And yet what we see is everybody pulling back into in-group loyalty, class loyalty, even, you might say, of school loyalties. No one is courageous enough in the major field to think in terms of a planetary com-mitment. The themes of myths will be the same a hundred years from now as they were four thousand years ago, the basic themes(..)

You cannot export myth. Either through space or through time. And this is one of the problems of our whole biblical tradition. Here is a mythology that grew out of a social context that is so far away from what we have now that it is not servicing our psyches. It always has to be interpreted to us. And artwork that you have to have someone tell about is not working on you. But itโ€™s the Aha!, which tells you it is you, that is necessary in myth.

And so the myth that we think we are living by is not operating on us. Hence confusion; hence a sense of tension; hence a sense of anxiety; everything that youโ€™re doing, the very nature of your life is denied by the myth that we have. Every natural act is a sinful act, as I say, unless itโ€™s been baptized or circumcised. This denigration of life is one of the terrible things about our ideals because theyโ€™re not out of our life. Nietzsche has a saying in The Will to Power that all ideals of this kind must be rejected, that they denigrate the life which is. You see?

Ideals have to grow out of experience.โ€

๐Ÿ’ซMy choice for the Best Pavilion at the Venice Biennale goes to Ireland

Dreamshook by Isabel Nolan @nolanisabel

At a time of war, political instability and technological acceleration, art is turning towards spirituality again.

I am getting tired of conceptual works with textiles, sand and tiles. Donโ€™t get me wrong, itโ€™s not bad, but artists have been copying one another for a while now. What we want is to see a Miroฬ of our time โ€” give us some light, hope, a walk towards the sun

This is what Isabel Nolan provides with her dreamy works on paper, aluminium and, yes, textiles โ€” but I forgive her for this choice.

Her art is โ€œa reference to humanismโ€. For me, she gives us spirituality without trying to be spiritual. Meanwhile, in the hall nearby, Kader Attia is presenting a video artwork about Vietnamese shamans. Sorry, thatโ€™s lame.

But Isabel Nolan gives me a breath of fresh air โ€” like this aluminium window sculpture to walk through โ€” after the dark and heavy halls of the Arsenale, which neither inspired me nor gave me any new food for thought.

It was just โ€œehhโ€ โ€” which confirmed my hypothesis about the Biennale and the art system. Iโ€™ll share it soonish enough, but in the meanwhile โ€” letโ€™s enjoy Nolansโ€™ #venicebiennale #irelandpavillion #isabelnolan #artreview taken in Venice, Italy by @yuliaworld
