POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
10 years ago I was on the start line of Ironman New Zealand with a pretty good crew including the Mayor of Taupō himself, Cameron Brown.

Fast forward a decade and the goal posts have shifted slightly.

Tomorrow I’m lining up for Peaks Challenge in Falls Creek.
235km. 4,500m of climbing. A big day out in the hills with thousands of other questionable decision makers.

While every other retired pro seems to be doing Hyrox, I’ve gone the other direction and decided that riding my bike up mountains for 8+ hours sounded like a better life choice.

This one kicks off the build toward Ironman 70.3 Cairns (M40-44) so consider this the opening chapter of the “let’s see if the old diesel engine still works” campaign. Pray for me. taken in Falls Creek by @callummillward

I used to race triathlon professionally. I was good at it. Not world beating, but good enough to make it my life for 12 years. I made some funny videos with the world’s best pros.

Then I stopped.

Not because I burned out. Not because I got injured - well my knees “check engine light” came on. Taj arrived in 2019, and somewhere between changing nappies and starting The Cupcake Cartel, racing moved from the front of my life to the back of it. Sport is a revolving door and it was time to exit and eat all of the cupcakes.

A lot has happened in those 8 years. We’ve built a team of 750 athletes. We launched CUPCKE Apparel in 2024 and opened a store in Noosa. This month we’re launching Cartel Coaching with coaches I genuinely believe in.

And I’m racing again.

Not as a professional. As a 42 year-old in the men’s 40–44 age group, lining up at Moreton Bay on May 10th for my first race back in 8 years.

I don’t know what my body will do. I think the run comes last. I don’t know how it feels to cross a finish line when the only person timing you is yourself and maybe Taj. I do know I want to find out.

This isn’t a comeback. It’s just what chapter two looks like for me.

Follow along if you want. I’ll be honest about all of it and share my training along the way. Balancing family, work and training.

Missing: Fitness. Last seen 10 days ago at Boulder Reservoir. It’s been a slippery slope of indulgence, relaxation and generally avoiding any kind of structure. A common theme in my life post race, and may be a positive contribution to longevity in our sport || @koruptvision taken in IRONMAN USA - Mountain by @callummillward

Good luck to everyone racing the Ironman World Championship in Kona tomorrow! 🌺

I was lucky enough to race there 3 times as a pro. They’re some of my best memories despite being some of the most challenging. Race week was always super busy. A ton of commitments with media and sponsors and that’s before the race has begun.

I always tell people to make the most of race week, take it all in and enjoy it. Race day is a celebration. It may be a painful celebration with 2000 of your closest friends but it’s the finale of many months of training and preparation.

My hot tip: don’t forget to apply sunscreen. Swipe for proof 😅 by @callummillward

2026 recap: 1st at 70.3 Cairns, 3rd at 70.3 Sunshine Coast M40-44.

After an 8 year hiatus from competing as a pro I’m super grateful just to be racing again. This time last year I was over 100kgs and not loving the fact I’d let myself go. Physical fitness had taken a backseat as I was fully immersed in making our business a success and being a father. Training is hell of a lot different now, squeezing what I can in around being a dad and running a very busy business.

Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast wasn’t perfect but I still feel lucky to be on the start line next to so many @the.cupcake.cartel athletes. I had a solid 27min swim, fastest bike split of 2:16 in my age group, then ran as well as I expected with a 1:33 for a 4:21 total.

Next is a summer of running and cycle racing to get more miles in the legs and get into better physical shape. I’m still mapping out races around work and family commitments but excited to keep improving. by @callummillward

Ready to grip and rip for age group M40-44 race #2 tomorrow at Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast. The past 3months have been super busy with work but I’ve tried to fit in what I can, when I can. The aim each week has always been consistency. Stacking days, weeks and months. Good luck to everyone, especially @the.cupcake.cartel and @cartel.coaching athletes. taken in Mooloolaba, Queensland by @callummillward

2 weeks out from Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast. A quick recap of how training looks balancing running a business, raising a 6 year old and trying to avoid divorce:
✅ Celebrated my return to racing and a win at 70.3 Cairns by getting sick for 2 weeks
✅ Recovered. Started an intensive run block to work on strength and speed. Started with strides, hill reps and increased mileage.
✅ Hurt my calf sprinting a 2km kids race with Taj. 2 weeks of no running.
✅ Got the calf right and work decided it was time to go crazy. Busiest couple of months of my life with @cupcke.apparel going bonkers.

Several times I considered switching to doing 70.3 Sunshine Coast as a relay. There’s no such thing as a perfect build. I still stick by consistency being the key to improvement and success. The weeks that I have been training I’ve banked 10-15hrs. Often times I’m on the treadmill or trainer after dinner while Taj and Alise are sleeping. The neighbours hear sweating and groaning but it’s not what they think.

I’m making the most of the next 10 days until we dial back and balancing @the.cupcake.cartel annual membership drive. Squeezing training in when I can.

Here’s a vid of a recent crit race (Men’s B grade). I like to use these to hurt myself. Only racing can really take you deep into that place where everything hurts and your gums feel like they’re bleeding 😅 taken in Noosa Heads, Queensland by @callummillward
