Starting GLP1 treatment raises a question that matters beyond the first few months: how long will you need it?

Professor Giles Yeo @gilesyeo , a Cambridge professor who studies obesity biology, says many people may need ongoing treatment. He compares it with medication for high blood pressure, where the benefit depends on continued use. Weight can return after stopping.

These medicines deserve more thought than a temporary cosmetic fix.

The word “processed” covers everything from cooking dinner to industrial food manufacturing.

Professor Giles Yeo @gilesyeo , a Cambridge obesity researcher and author of Gene Eating, explains why that distinction matters. He says we should eat less of most ultra processed foods, while questioning whether the label alone tells us enough about their nutritional value.

Supermarket bread is his example of why the category needs a closer look.

Has a relative ever commented on your weight?

Too fat, too thin, “you’ve filled out,” “are you eating?” — most people can name the exact sentence, and roughly how old they were.

Fat Check: is fatphobia real? Why people switch off the moment they hear the word, why it isn’t only about fat people, and why teenagers get the worst of it.

Too full for another mouthful of dinner, but somehow ready for dessert.

Professor Giles Yeo @gilesyeo, who studies how the brain controls appetite at Cambridge, explains why this
feels so familiar. When you’re hungry, even simple food tastes fantastic. As you fill up, food has to offer a bigger reward to tempt you.

Dessert can clear a bar that another spoonful of rice cannot.

Most of us have been taught that weight is mainly a discipline problem.

Eat less. Move more. Try harder.

I thought that too.

Professor Giles Yeo @gilesyeo has spent nearly 30 years at Cambridge studying how our genes, hormones and brain control appetite and body weight.

And this conversation genuinely changed how I think about it.

He explains why two people can sit in front of the same pizza and experience completely different levels of hunger.

Why your brain can actively fight you when you lose weight.

Why keeping weight off can be harder than losing it in the first place.

And why somebody struggling with their weight isn’t necessarily lacking discipline.

We also go deep into calories, ultra-processed food, stress eating, protein, Ozempic, muscle loss and his simple 16:30:5 framework.

The takeaway isn’t that we have no responsibility for our health.

It’s that understanding the biology we’re working with gives us a much better chance of making choices we can actually sustain.

New episode of Thriving Minds is now live.

Most people are taught to think weight comes down to discipline, calories and making better choices.

Professor Giles Yeo’s @gilesyeo work shows why the reality is far more complicated.

After 30 years studying appetite and body weight at Cambridge, his research points to the role genetics, hunger signals and metabolism can play in determining how easy or difficult weight control feels from one person to another.

He also explains why losing weight can make your body fight to regain it, why some people experience far more food noise than others, and why the same approach to weight loss will never work equally well for everyone.

Professor Giles Yeo on the Thriving Minds Podcast live on 15.10.2026.

Professor @gilesyeo is back - and this one is for every parent who’s ever picked up a tired, grumpy child at the school gates 😴
Ever wonder why kids hit a wall in the afternoon? It’s often down to energy spikes and crashes - and fibre is one of the simplest ways to help.
Giles explains how fibre slows the release of energy into the bloodstream, keeping blood sugar steadier for longer. Which means better focus and energy through the school day - and hopefully a much happier child at pick-up time 🙌

For a quick win look out for the options with beans on the school menu 🫘

Now you can change your body — do you still have to love it?

From Rose: All I ever really wanted was for fat people to be respected no matter their size, and for people to stop pretending they couldn’t be loved or beautiful because of the way we view fat bodies. That’s what body positivity meant to me, and it still does. I don’t have to resist a medication designed to help bodies like mine to prove it.

(Recorded in the summer, before Rose came off GLP1s)

The latest episode is OUT TODAY and is about body positivity — what it promised, and where it has landed now these drugs exist. Out now wherever you get your pods, links in bio. by @gilesyeo
