The best meditation tip I was ever given…
Learn to meditate everywhere.
It’s going to support you more than only being able to do it in a quiet room with dim lights.
For example, say you’re having a chaotic day at work and at lunch you crave some calm and grounding. If you have practiced meditating in different places, you can head to a park, sit on a bench and find a moment of connection and reflection.
Three other tips that helped me are:
1. know that it’s hard. People don’t think it will be. It gets easier with practice but you will still have days where it feels easier or harder.
2. there are different types of meditation. Try them out and try different teachers. Find a practice that works for you. For example, a walking meditation can be amazing for those who struggle to sit in quiet.
3. Have an intention and have compassion. An intention can be anything - it’s your WHY. Maybe you want to achieve enlightenment or maybe you are just looking for added mental focus… the why is going to be different for different people but it’s the thing you can keep coming back to as a reminder of why are you doing it. The compassion part is for the times when your mind continually wonders. Be kind to yourself, remind yourself you’re human and remind yourself of your intention as you gently bring yourself back to meditation.
