One of the great snippets from this pod with Mark where he mentions the power of assigning extrinsic and intrinsic metrics to athletes running piece to give you a more holistic view of your performance.

Pair this with specific session feedback relating to what limited you such as " breathing felt chaotic" or "legs felt heavy" can give your coach even better insight in how to adjust the sessions in the future.

Check out the full episode through following the link in my bio.

We are in a fortunate place at present in the CrossFit space where many of the best coaches are willing to share their insights and processes I think this alone will significantly snowball what progress looks like for the sport in the coming years and I am excited to have more of this conversations. by @tysonmaherr

Here’s an insight into a week of training for one of my athletes, a Teen CrossFit Games athlete in week 3 of a 12-week pre-Open base build.

His key gaps are running capacity, lower body muscular endurance, muscle-up capacity under fatigue, and absolute strength in line with his new age group standards.

To work on those his week includes two heavy barbell strength sessions, a coached running session off site and lower body endurance work in mixed settings. He also does ring muscle-ups inside longer aerobic pieces, plus a weekly tester where set size is the priority.

Saturday shows how the pieces fit together: heavy pulls first while he’s fresh, then conditioning built to help him hold his output under fatigue, then low-cost aerobic work to finish.

The goal of this block is to build a bigger engine and a stronger base heading into the Open, so the intensity we add later has something to sit on.

Swipe through for the full week, Saturday’s sessions, and the reasoning behind each piece. by @tysonmaherr

Another Stampede done 🐂

We never wanted this to be just another local comp. We wanted it to be the one people remember. The hard one. The one they come back for. And I genuinely think we got there.

Day wouldn’t run without @tysonmaherr

His programming is unmatched. This man’s knowledge is INSANE 🔥 Every single event has INTENT behind it. Nothing is slapped together. Ask him why a movement is there, why the rep scheme is what it is, why it’s in that order, and he’ll give you an answer without blinking.

To our volunteers: you guys are freakin AWESOME. No one does it like you. You ran the day so smoothly that most people had no idea how much was happening behind the scenes. That’s all you.

To our judges: thank you for holding the standard all day long. That’s what makes a comp people trust.

And to every athlete who stepped on the floor: thank you for showing up, giving it your all and respecting our space like it was your own. You made it what it was.

Tired. Proud. Grateful. And already thinking about next year 👀

Because honestly?

We’re just getting started 🧡🖤 by @tysonmaherr

Insight to a day of training for one of my athletes.

The aerobic work goes first because it sits higher in her needs analysis. The PM session is more strength endurance focused, so it can carry the fatigue left over from the morning.

Monday is two sessions.

AM: Easy to threshold build run. 3 x 2400m continuous, finishing the last 600m of each set at threshold. We're building threshold pace along with running skill, and teaching her what each pace actually feels like.

PM: Barbell cycling, squat maintenance and posterior chain work. The barbell piece is a progression built off a workout from NZ Champs. Time blocks set the rate of work, and the set ends once she can't hold it, so she isn't accumulating excess fatigue. Squats stay on a maintenance dose, and the posterior chain accessories target specific weaknesses.

Swipe through for the full sessions and the reasoning behind each piece.

Someone told us grit’s the competitor gym of Newcastle… that it can feel intimidating to start.

We get it. But here’s the truth: our day to day is people showing up, training hard, getting coached properly, back my good programming & cheering each other on.

Some are chasing their own personal goals and never plan to compete. Some are in our 1 on 1 program chasing a higher level.

Different goals, same gym. Everyone’s grit, no matter what you’re chasing.
we’re for everyone.

But if competing’s ever crossed your mind,

Here is a snippet from a technique review I did with an athlete as we look to overhaul her rowing.

These were the primary takeaways from the conversation and hopefully you find some value in it.

These catch:
Over compressing, with shins well past vertical and bum coming to close to her heels. This is causing dead space in the initial portion of the drive and losing precious power in the stroke.

The drive:
Torso opens early which shifts the focus from the legs to the upper body losing power through the strongest part of the stroke. Instead we are going to look to maintain that 11 o clock position until the legs are done.

The finish:
Excessive lean back in the finish of the stroke places unneeded stress on the lower back and is more movement that doesn’t translate to watts on the rower. Instead we are going to look to finish at a 1 o clock position and remove the “trex” position of the arms by lowering the handle to the lower part of our chest.

The return: We are looking to maintain straight arms until the handle clears the knees prior to shifting hips to their reset position.

The goal is correct sequencing to have express part of our movement translate to power our stroke. by @tysonmaherr

18th fittest teen on earth.

It’s crazy to be able to speak those words, have the privilege to compete along side the greatest teenagers in the sport and have this milestone apart of me for a lifetime.

The games weekend was a huge mental struggle for me as well as physical with worries of how I would perform a while before the competition had began even feeling the fittest, strongest and most well rounded I had ever been but just something didn’t feel right, there was zero chance i was giving up at this point since I had worked so hard. Not being able to push as hard as I know I can and truly showcase my capabilities was incredibly frustrating, but These are not excuses rather learning curves and situations which I can learn from in the future not just in sport but in all aspects of my life.

During this whole process it was never done alone, and with every ounce of love and appreciation I have In my heart I want to thank every single person who has helped and supported me, Thankyou🫶.

@tysonmaherr @rnrbyainsleigh @gritperformancecentre @crossfitmuswellbrook @livdaniels

These people and communities are the amazing souls who have been with me since the beginning and I wouldn’t want it any other way, I truly appreciate all that you guys do and am beyond grateful to have you in my corner❤️.

Now is the time to rest and regather myself to come back stronger and fitter.

Until next time @crossfitgames 🫡🇦🇺 by @tysonmaherr
